Zebulon, NC - Chip Ambres singled home the winning run with none out in the ninth as Carolina defeated Tennessee 5-4 on Thursday night at Five County Stadium.
The game-winning inning was built on two unusual plays. Matt Demarco doubled to start the inning when his routine bouncer flattened out under the glove of first baseman Chris Duncan. Jeff Inglin, bunted to the mound, but reliefe Andy Cavazos (L, 2-5) double-pumped before throwing to third, allowing Demarco to slide in before the tag. Josh Willingham, who walked four times, was intentionally walked to fill the bases before Ambres smash inside third base on a 2-0 pitch for the win.
Pat Flury (W, 3-3) earned the win with 1 1/3 of scoreless relief. Flury fanned Duncan with the bases loaded to end the ninth. Tennessee stranded the bases filled in each of the final two innings.
Peter Bauer made his final start of the season, pitching six innings allowing four hits for a no-decision.
Carolina won the series with Tennessee 3-1 and the season series 15-13.
The Jacksonville Suns enter Five County beginning Friday to close the regular season. Trevor Hutchinson (10-7, 4.26) starts against Suns lefty Luis Gonzalez (1-3, 4.33) at 7:15 PM ET.
