Notes: 3B Joe Dillon was promoted to Triple-A Albuquerque before Carolina's game Friday night. Dillon, who was in Albuquerque earlier this month, left the Southern League as the # 2 hitter with a .342 average, # 1 in slugging percentage (.684), second in doubles (13), second in on-base percentage (.426), third in homers (9), first in extra base hits (22) and second in RBI (31). No addition to the Mudcats roster was immediately made... Messenger's save was just the third of his career. The last Messenger save was August 9, 1999 in the Gulf Coast League against the Expos rookie team. Messenger was used due to primary closer Kevin Cave working two innings Thursday night, and secondary closer Bryan Gaal pitching in the last two games... Carolina avoided the four-game home sweep with the win. The last time the Mudcats were swept in a four-game set at Five County was July 1-4, 2002 by Tennessee, spanning 25 series... Former Mudcat and big leaguer catcher Ben Petrick officially retired from baseball Thursday. Petrick reached the majors with Colorado in 1999 and was later traded to Detroit. Petrick, 27, was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease after the 1999 season, a condition that also afflicts his father. Petrick was playing 2004 with San Diego's Triple-A Portland affiliate. Petrick hit .309 in 20 games with Carolina in 1999, and had 27 major league homers in 240 games.
