Chattanooga, TN - Chip Ambres socked a solo homer in the fourth inning, taking the Carolina Mudcats to their sixth straight win in a 1-0 victory at Bell South Park on Tuesday night.

Ambres (HR, 3, 1-3, RBI, HBP, 2K) drilled a 1-0 pitch from former Mudcat Luke Hudson (L, 1-2) into the trees beyond the left-centerfield wall for the game's lone run.

Nic Ungs (W, 2-1, 7IP, 2H, 0R, 0W, 8K) allowed his only two hits in the first two innings of his seven-inning start. Ungs fanned eight without issuing a walk, while lowering his ERA from 3.16 to 1.75.

The Mudcats (19-13) moved to within one game of first place Jacksonville in the Eastern Division. The Suns lost for the second straight night to the S.L.'s worst club, Greenville, 4-2.

Hudson, making his third start after missing all of 2003 with a torn labrum, struck out seven over his six innings.

Pat Flury (ND, 1IP, 1H, 0R, 0W, 1K) worked a scoreless eighth inning before Kevin Cave (S, 6, 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0W, 0K) pitched a perfect ninth to secure Carolina's third shutout of the season.

Bill Murphy (2-1, 3.21) starts the third game of the series Wednesday at 12:15 PM ET against Chattanooga LH Charlie Manning (2-2, 3.48).

Notes: Ambres' homer was his third in six games, after going homerless in the first 26 games of the season... Jason Stokes' club-record streak of four consecutive games homering ended Tuesday night. Stokes doubled, singled and struck out twice in the 1-0 win. Stokes' effort was two games shy of the Southern League record of six set by Derrek Lee in 1996... Both benches were warned by home plate umpire Pete Pederson after two pitches sailed behind hitters in the third inning. Hudson threw a pitch behind Jim Kavourias, then Ungs fired a pitch 15 feet behind Hudson when he led off the Lookouts third inning. Ambres was hit in the arm in the eighth inning by reliever David Gil, but no action was taken... Carolina won its ninth straight game against the Eastern Division, whittling down a five-game divisonal deficit to one since April 28th... The Mudcats have homered in six straight games... The Mudcats six-game winning streak is their longest since winning nine consecutive April 12-20, 2003. The club record is 10... The Mudcats are 10-1 in the last 11 games at Bell South Park since May 27, 2002.
