Jacksonville, FL - The Jacksonville Suns rallied from a two-run deficit, then saw a severe rainstorm delay the game one hour and 44 minutes in the top of the eighth inning as the Suns dealt Carolina a 4-2 loss on Monday afternoon at the Baseball Grounds.

Pat Magness (HR, 4, 1-3, rbi) homered in the second, then Andy Rohleder (2-3, rbi) singled in Josh Willingham (1-3, r, 2b) in the fourth for a 2-0 lead before the Suns (33-31) began to rally.

An unearned run in the fifth put Jacksonville on the board in the fifth inning. A two-out error by Josh Wilson (1-3) allowed Nick Alvarez to reach, putting runners at first and third ahead of a run-scoring single by Tony Socarras (1-3, rbi) trimmed the deficit to 2-1.

In the sixth, Peter Bauer (L, 4-4, 7ip, 5h, 4r, 3er, 1w, 5k) allowed a two-run homer to Willy Aybar to right for a 3-2 Suns lead. Bauer the surrendered a solo homer to Alvarez in the seventh.

The game was delayed with Matt Demarco batting leadoff in the eighth inning against reliever Yhency Brazoban. The Jacksonville grounds crew could not completely cover the field during the downpour, exposing the third base grass and dirt. Due to the weight of rain on the tarp, nearly 15 minutes later, while still trying to tug the tarp into place, a flash of lightning forced the group of 30 off of the field while rain continued to fall.

Following the delay, Elvin Nina replaced Brazoban and retired all six Mudcats hitters he faced.

The loss leaves the Mudcats (34-31) 1 1/2 behind first-place Chattanooga with five games remaining in the first half.

Jeff Fulchino (1-1, 5.40) starts the Mudcats' final road game of the first half Tuesday night at 7:05 PM ET.
