Zebulon, NC - A fifth inning home run by Chris Duncan stood up as Tennessee defeated Carolina 1-0 at Five County Stadium on Tuesday night.

Ronald Belizario (L, 2-5, 6ip, 3h, 1r, 1er, 2w, 5k) watched Duncan take a 2-2 pitch opposite field against the screen under the left-field scoreboard.

The Mudcats (31-28) fell to third place in the East, remaining two games behind Chattanooga, which was defeated by second place Jacksonville 3-2.  The Suns trail by 1 1/2, while the Smokies (30-29) are three back.

Chris Narveson (W, 1-6) and three relievers combined on a four-hit shutout.  Narveson allowed a first-inning double to Josh Wilson (1-3, 2b, w, k).  The next Mudcats hit was a single in the seventh inning by Pat Magness (2-4).

Against Smokies closer Carmen Cali in the ninth, Carolina put runners at the corners with two outs, but Dennis Anderson (0-4, k) grounded into a force play to end the game.

Peter Bauer (4-3, 3.88) starts the series' second game Wednesday night against Brad Thompson (7-1, 1.49) at 7:15 PM ET.

Notes:  CF Eric Reed was placed on the disabled list with a fractured wrist before Tuesday's game, retroactive to June 6th.  OF Andy Rohleder was promoted from High-A Jupiter to replace Reed on the roster.  Reed will be sidelined anywhere from 4-12 weeks...  IF/C  Eliezer Alfonzo made his second straight pinch-hitting appearance since joining Carolina Monday, fanning against Nick Stocks in the eighth inning Tuesday night.  Alfonzo was second in the Florida State League in homers prior to his promotion...  There was a 19-minute delay in the third inning Tuesday night with a light malfunction.... Belizario faced two hitters in the seventh inning, marking the first time he has pitched into the seventh all season in 12 starts....  1B Jason Stokes went 0-4, snapping a nine-game hitting streak...  C Josh Willingham made his first start in left field since August, 2003.  Willingham was 1-3 with a walk...  Belizario matched against Narveson for the third time this season...  Carolina had 16 hits in Monday's win over Jacksonville...  The Mudcats were shutout for the third time in 2004.
