Greenville, SC - Josh Willingham drilled a three-run double in the seventh inning as Carolina defeated Greenville for the second straight game 5-2 at Municipal Stadium on Thursday night.
Willingham's double capped a night which witnessed a pair of Mudcats comebacks. Carolina (13-19) trailed 1-0 and 2-1 before tying the game in the sixth on a grounder by Jason Stokes (1-5, rbi). Carolina's seventh inning began on a single by Rex Rundgren (2-3, r, rbi, w). Winning pitcher Nic Ungs (W, 6-7, 7ip, 6h, 2r, 2er, 2w, 7k) was walked on four pitches attempting to sacrifice before Matt Demarco (1-3, w, s, cs, k) bunted the runners to second and third. Izzy Pineda (L, 4-7) fell behind Chip Ambres (1-4, r, 2b, w, k) 2-0 in the count before Alec Zumwalt entered to pitch. Zumwalt walked Ambres to fill the bases ahead of Willingham's gapper to left-center. The hit came off a 0-2 pitch from Zumwalt, and was his first in his two games back from the major leagues.
Ungs snapped a two-game losing streak, scattering six hits, two walks and a hit batsman through his seven inning start. Jason Iehl (ND, 1ip, 0h, 0r, 1w, 0k) worked a scoreless eighth in his Double-A debut. Mike Flannery (S, 1, 1ip, 1h, 0r, 0w, 2k) fanned two batters in the ninth to record his first Mudcats save. Rob Ryan (2-3, r, 2b) and Rundgren had two hits for Carolina.
