Zebulon, NC - Tony Pena had three hits including a two-run homer in the first inning as the Greenville Braves won the duel of the Futures Game pitchers, 8-2 over Carolina at Five County Stadium on Tuesday night.
Pena drilled a 1-1 pitch from Bill Murphy (L, 6-4, 5+ip, 5h, 6r, 6er, 4w, 4k) to open the scoring. Murphy pitched a scoreless inning in the Futures Game last Sunday for the U.S. team, while Jose Capellan (W, 5-1) pitched a shutout inning for the World Team. The game was played at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas as part of All-Star weekend.
Capellan, who was consistently clocked between 94-96 mph, was handed a 4-0 lead by the fifth inning, and only yielded a two-run single to Matt Demarco (2-4, 2b, 2rbi). Demarco extended his hitting streak to a team-best 10 games with a double in the first inning.
Murphy allowed a run in the third on a two-out single by Capellan to score Jackson Melian. The Braves (15-8) knocked Murphy out in the sixth after a walk and double. Ryan Baker (ND, 2ip, 5h, 2er, 1w, 1k) entered to allow three hits to the first four batters he faced. The inning ended with the Braves ahead 8-2.
Ruddy Lugo (ND, 2ip, 4h, 0r, 2w, 2k) made his first appearance since being recalled from High-A Jupiter, stranding the bases loaded in both the eighth and ninth.
With the win, Greenville snapped an eight-game losing streak to Carolina (10-14).The Mudcats remain 6 1/2 behind Chattanooga in the East.
Trevor Hutchinson starts against Kyle Davies in the third game of the series on Wednesday night.
