Montgomery, AL - The Carolina Mudcats won their second straight to lead into the Major League All-Star break, defeating Montgomery 7-3 in 10 innings on Sunday night.
Charles Frazier (3-5, r, 2b, rbi, k, sb) enjoyed his first career three-hit game at Double-A, including a tie-breaking single in the 10th inning. After a second run scored on an error, Jason Stokes (3-5, 2b, 2rbi, w) gapped a double to right-center to cap a four-run inning.
Pat Flury (W, 1-3, 1.2ip, 1h, 0r, 0w, 5k) notched his first win of the season, working through an inherited jam in the ninth, then whiffing the side in the bottom of the 10th.
The Mudcats (7-11) retruned to .500 at the break, 44-44, and moved to within six games of first-place Chattanooga and Greenville in the East.
Peter Bauer (ND, 7ip, 8h, 2r, 2er, 0w, 2k) pitched well again, yet received a no-decision. Bauer allowed eight hits within the first three innings, then recorded four hitless innings in succession to end his outing. Bauer departed leading 3-2, but Ryan Baker (BS-ND, 1.1ip, 4h, 1r, 1er, 0w, 1k) lost the lead in the bottom of the eighth on a triple-single combination by Fernando Cortez and Chairon Isenia.
Carolina nearly took a 4-3 lead in the ninth, but Stokes was gunned at home plate on a superlative relay throw from shortstop Jace Brewer after Andy Rohleder doubled against the left field wall.
In the Biscuits ninth, Baker allowed consecutive singles with one out, putting runners at first and third before Flury entered. Flury fanned Dan Massiatte, who won the game Thursday night with a bases-loaded double against Flury. An intentional walk filled the bases before Flury struck out Dan Dement.
Montgomery scored one in the first inning against Bauer, but the Mudcats went ahead 2-1 in the second on doubles by Dennis Anderson (1-4, 2r, 2b, rbi, w, k) and Rex Rundgren (2-4, 2b, rbi, s, sb). Aaron Clark clubbed a homer in the second inning to tie the game.
Carolina knocked out 17 hits in the victory, and split the four-game series with the Biscuits (7-11).
After a three-day break, Carolina returns to action on Thursday, opening an eight-game homestand against Tennessee and Greenville. Trevor Hutchinson (5-5, 5.58) will start the opener against the first-half champion Smokies at 7:15 PM ET.
