Montgomery, AL - Nic Ungs earned his second straight victory and helped Carolina snap a three-game losing streak by defeating Montgomery 3-2 before 6,822 fans at Riverwalk Stadium on Saturday night. Ungs (W, 5-5, 6.2ip, 4h, 2r, 2er, 0w, 6k) carried a one-hit shutout into the seventh inning before allowing two runs.

Ungs faced the minimum 18 hitters through six innings. Chairon Isenia singled to lead off the second inning as the only Biscuit (7-10) baserunner. Isenia was thrown out advancing to second by left fielder Jeff Inglin (3-4, rbi).

Mike McNutt (ND, 1.1ip, 0h, 0r, 0w, 0k) entered behind Ungs in the seventh to retire Vince Harrison with the tying run at first base. McNutt followed with a perfect eighth inning. Closer Randy Messenger (S, 10, 1ip, 1h, 0r, 0w, 0k) ended the game with a 5-4-3 double play off the bat of Amado German.

Carolina scored unearned runs in the second and third innings, then posted another in the fourth. Matt Demarco (2-4, r, 2b, k) doubled to start the second, and scored when starting pitcher Matt Parker (L, 3-3) threw away Dennis Anderson's (0-2, r, s, w) sacrifice bunt.

In the third, Rex Rundgren (0-5, r, 3k, sb) reached on a passed ball on strike three. Rundgren stole second base, then scored on the second of three singles by Inglin.

Carolina moved ahead 3-0 in the fourth inning after Anderson walked with one out, advanced to third on a double by Andy Rohleder (1-4, 2b) and scored on Michael Tucker's (0-4, rbi) groundout.

With the victory, Carolina moved to 6-11 in the second half, keeping pace with first-place Chattanooga leading the East, seven games behind.
