Zebulon, NC - Playing their first games without Josh Willingham and Josh Wilson, the Carolina Mudcats white-hot offense struggled, shackled on four hits as the Jacksonville Suns blanked Carolina 6-0 before 2,824 fans at Five County Stadium.
TJ Nall (W, 5-4) worked 6 2/3 innings allowing just two hits to earn his first win in three starts against the Mudcats (5-9).
Peter Bauer (L, 5-6), pitching five days after carrying a perfect game into the eighth inning, allowed a single to the first batter of the game, which led to the first run. Bauer allowed two more in the sixth and one in the seventh. Bauer fanned seven over seven innings, walkinng none and permitting eight hits.
Jacksonville (5-9) won the series 2-1 and moved into an identical third place tie in the East. Both the Suns and Mudcats have Wednesday off.
Bauer did collect his first professional hit in the third inning, ending an 0-28 streak. The Mudcats club record for hitless at-bats in a single season was 0-29 set in 1999 by Chandler Martin.
Jeff Inglin legged out an infield single in the fourth, extending his hitting streak to a team-tying 10 games.
Shortstop Rex Rundgren, who was hitting .279 at High-A Jupiter, made his Double-A debut, batting eighth for manager Ron Hassey. Rundgren singled once in his four at-bats.
Ryan Baker allowed one run in the eighth on consecutive doubles by Willy Aybar and Derek Michaelis.
Brian Strelitz permitted a pinch-homer by Sergio Garcia in the ninth.
Centerfielder Shane Victorino went 3-5 with three runs scored, while second baseman Willy Aybar went 3-5 with a double and an RBI. Derek Michaelis, for the second straight game, doubled twice for the Suns.
Willingham, who was promoted directly to the major leagues after Monday's win, went 0-3 in the Marlins' win over Pittsburgh Tuesday night. Willingham batted fifth and played in left field. Wilson was in uniform for Albuquerque's game in Des Moines, Iowa against the Iowa Cubs. Kerry Wood made a major league rehab start against the Isotopes.
Trevor Hutchinson (5-5, 6.02) starts the series opener against the Montgomery Biscuits at Riverwalk Stadium on Thursday night at 8:05 PM ET. The Mudcats have not faced the Biscuits yet this season.
