Zebulon, NC - The Chattanooga Lookouts moved 25 games over .500 in the second half with a doubleheader sweep of the Carolina Mudcats at Five County Stadium on Sunday afternoon, taking identical 2-1 decisions.
In the opener, the Lookouts (40-15) edged the Mudcats (26-29) on a push-bunt single by Brian Peterson with two outs in the bottom of the 12th inning for the win. The Lookouts were batting last in Carolina's home park due to the game originating in Chattanooga on July 26th, but lasting just three pitches due to rain. Three hours and twenty-nine minutes of the three-hour, thirty-one minute game were played in Zebulon.
In the nightcap, Carolina saw its chances of a final at-bat victory ripped away on a spectacular diving catch by left fielder Travis Wilson with the bases loaded and one out in the seventh. Benito Baez walked the bases loaded to begin the inning, guarding a 2-0 lead. After Matt Demarco fanned, newcomer James Shanks hooked flyball into left-center. Wilson, horizontal to the ground, made the catch, crashed against the grass on the play, which resulted in only a sacrifice fly. Jeff Inglin popped out to end the game.
Carolina managed just one hit in game two, an infield single by pinch-hitter Andy Rohleder in the fifth inning against Matt Beech (W, 1-0).
Ryan Baker (L, 4-3) suffered the game two loss, with Randy Messenger (L, 6-2) saddled with the defeat in the opener.
Carolina will host another two games with the Lookouts beginning Monday at 5:30 PM ET. Saturday night's rain-suspended game will be completed first with the Mudcats leading 6-0 in the fifth inning. Another seven-inning game will follow.
