Birmingham, AL - Carolina hit four solo homers to lead Trevor Hutchinson and the Mudcats to an 8-4 triumph over the Birmingham Barons on Wednesday night at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.
Jason Stokes (HR, 21, 3-5, r, 2b, 2rbi), Rob Ryan (HR, 1, 1-4, r, rbi, hbp, k) and Chip Ambres (HR, 15, 1-3, 2r, rbi, w, k, sb) all homered against Eduardo Villacis (L, 4-4) in the second inning. Ryan Minor (HR, 7, 2-5, r, rbi, 2k, cs) launched a homer in the fourth as Carolina (24-27, 61-60) established a 6-0 lead.
Hutchinson (W, 9-6, 7ip, 7h, 2r, 2er, 2w, 1k), who won his fourth straight decision, allowed just two runs on seven hits in seven innings. Hutchinson witnessed four of the five double plays turned by Carolina in his mound tenure.
Ryan Baker (ND, 1ip, 2h, 2r, 2er, 1w, 0k) allowed a two-run double to Rob Sasser in the eighth inning as the West-leading Barons (31-20, 67-54) closed to within 7-4.
Josh Willingham (1-3, 2rbi, sf, ibb) lifted a sacrifice fly in the ninth to move the lead to 8-4.
Billy Hall (2-5, r, 2b, rbi, k) extended his hitting streak to 11 games, matching the Mudcats season long.
Carolina is 6-4 on its 12-game road trip with two games remaining.
Nic Ungs (8-8, 4.62) starts Thursday night's third game of the series against Birmingham's Dennis Ulacia (7-6, 3.72) at 8:00 PM ET.
