Birmingham, AL - Brian Anderson drove in four runs to lead Brandon McCarthy to a victory in his Double-A debut as Birmingham defeated Carolina 10-5 on Tuesday night at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.
Anderson hit a three-run triple in the fifth as the Barons (31-19, 67-53) built a 6-1 lead. McCarthy won his 15th game of the season along three stops on the Chicago White Sox chain, including his seventh straight start. With seven strikeouts, McCarthy has fanned 180 hitters this season.
Carolina (23-27, 60-60) erected a major threat in the seventh, scoring four runs and filling the bases with one out. However before Rob Ryan (0-3, hbp) saw a 2-0 pitch, Jason Stokes (1-4, rbi, 2k) was picked off of second base. Ryan then lined out to first to end the inning.
Jason Pearson (ND, 0ip, 2h, 2r, 2er, 0w, 0k), Mike Flannery (ND, 1ip, 3h, 1r, 1er, 0w, 2k) and Joe Rodriguez (ND, 1ip, 1h, 1r, 1er, 3w, 1k) combined to allow four runs and six hits in the final two innings as the Barons pulled away.
Peter Bauer (L, 5-10, 6ip, 6h, 6r, 6er, 3w, 4k) suffered his league-tying 10th loss, allowing six runs over six innings. Bauer also survived a frightening moment in the sixth inning when Ruddy Yan lined a ball off the left side of Bauer's face. Bauer, alert and appearing stunned, dropped to the ground as the two teams' trainers rushed to the mound. The ball ricocheted into a force out to end the inning. Bauer was evaluated in the clubhouse and the initial diagnosis was that Bauer did not suffer a concussion or have any broken bones.
Billy Hall (1-4, r, 2b, 2rbi, w, k, sb) extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a two-run double in the seventh. Jeff Inglin (2-4, rbi, hbp), playing his first game in Birmingham after playing 321 games as a Baron from 1998-2000, had two hits and an RBI.
Carolina fell 12 games behind Chattanooga in the East with 20 to play. Trevor Hutchinson (8-6, 4.62) starts against Eduardo Villacis (4-3, 2.80) at 8:00 PM ET on Wednesday night.
