Zebulon, NC - Jamie Gann amassed three
hits, including a two-run triple in the first inning,
as Huntsville blanked Carolina for the second straight
game 5-0 before 5,264 fans at Five County Stadium on
Saturday night.
Huntsville (22-18) scored four times with two outs
in the first inning, then knocked out Carolina (17-23)
starter Peter Bauer (L, 5-9, 1.2ip, 5h, 5r, 5er, 3w,
3k) in the second. Bauer walked consecutive batters
in the first before striking out Brad Nelson. Gann then
whipped an opposite-line two-run triple. Chris Barnwell
singled home Gann on the next pitch, then came home
on a base hit by Ozzie Chavez.
Bauer, whose 1 2/3 inning start was his shortest of
the season, made just 43 pitches.
Carolina was no-hit two outs into the eighth inning
by Stars starter Glenn Woolard and Brian Adams until
Rex Rundgren (1-1) stroked a line single to left in
his first at-bat of the game. The Mudcats managed four
hits within the final two innings.
Brian Strelitz (ND, 4.1ip, 2h, 0r, 0w, 2k) worked 4
1/3 innings in long relief, moving the game to Jason
Pearson (ND, 1ip, 2h, 0r, 0w, 1k) and Ryan Baker (ND,
2ip, 1h, 0r, 0w, 2k) who combined to pitch the final
three innings of the game.
Carolina completes its eight-game homestand Sunday
at 4:00 PM ET with Trevor Hutchinson (7-6, 4,95) starting
against Huntsville lefty Matt Ford (1-4, 4.45).
