Zebulon, NC - Frank Moore hit a grand
slam while Scott Kazmir shined in his debut as Montgomery
defeated Carolina 11-1 on Sunday at Five County Stadium.
Moore connected against Peter Bauer in a five-run sixth
inning for a 10-0 lead. Bauer (L, 5-8, 6ip, 11h, 10r,
8er, 5w, 1k) worked six arduous innings with a shorthanded
bullpen, allowing 10 runs on 11 hits. Montgomery (15-21)
scored three times in the third and twice in the fourth.
Carolina (14-21) was limited to four hits in the loss,
its second straight after a three-game winning streak.
Pat Flury (ND, 2ip, 1h, 0r, 1w, 2k) worked two scoreless
innings before Randy Messenger (ND, 1ip, 2h, 1r, 1er,
1w, 0k) allowed a run in the ninth.
Kazmir (W, 1-0) won his debut with the Tampa Bay organization.
Kazmir was acquired Friday in a four-player deal with
the New York Mets centering on major leaguer Victor
Zabmrano. Kazmir stranded seven baserunners in his five
innings, fanning eight. The Mudcats went 0-7 with runners
in scoring position during Kazmir's tenure. Kazmir,
a lefty, pitched consistently in the mid-90s with his
fastball, and collected seven of his strikeouts on fastballs.
Kazmir was the Mets' first-round pick from Cypress Hills
High in Houston, Texas in the 2002 draft.
Carolina's only run scored in the ninth on a sacrifice
fly by Billy Hall (1-4, 2b, rbi, sf, k, sb)against reliever
Sam Walton. Dennis Anderson (2-3, 2b, w, k) had two
of the Mudcats' four hits.
Trevor Hutchinson (6-6, 5.31) starts the third game
of the series Monday night at 7:15 PM ET against Chris
Seddon (7-6, 4.84).
