Greenville, SC - Josh Wilingham doubled home the tie-breaking runs in the 10th inning as Carolina won its third straight game over Greenville 4-1 at Municipal Stadium on Friday night.
Willingham (1-5, R, 2B, 2RBI, 2K) drilled a 1-1 pitch from Matt Coenen (L, 0-1) against the centerfield wall with two men aboard to put Carolina (12-10) ahead 3-1. After a pair of walks, Jimmy Goelz (2-5, 2RBI, K) ripped a single off of Andy Marte's glove at third base to score the third run of the inning.
Greenville (5-17) forced extra innings on a two-out, two-strike RBI-single by pinch-hitter Napoleon Calzado to score Cory Aldridge. However, reliever Bryan Gaal (BS, 1, W, 1-1, 2IP, 2H, 1R, 1ER, 1W, 4K) fanned Adam Stern to end the inning with the potential winning run at third base.
Carolina took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a trapped pop-fly single by Goelz with two outs. The rally began on a two-out hustle double by Chip Ambres (1-3, R, 2B, 2W), followed by a passed ball to allow Michael Tucker (0-3, 2W, 2K) on a strikeout.
Nic Ungs (ND, 6.1IP, 5H, 0R, 1W, 6K) carried a shutout into the seventh inning before needing relief help from Pat Flury. Flury (ND, 1.2IP, 1H, 0R, 1W, 1K) entered in the seventh with two on and one out, walking a batter to fill the bases before inducing a foul popout and a line out to Goelz playing right field.
Carolina remained four games behind first-place Jacksonville in the East, and finished its eight-game road trip 4-4. Bill Murphy (1-1, 2.82) starts the series opener with Mobile Saturday night at 7:15 against the BayBears Steve Watkins (1-1, 3.52).
