Zebulon, NC - Dionys Cesar drove in a Chattanooga-record eight runs to lead the Lookouts to an 11-5 triumph over the Carolina Mudcats at Five County Stadium on Tuesday night.
Cesar, who entered the game leading the league with a .531 average, went 4-5 with a two-run triple and a pair of three-run homers against the Mudcats bullpen. Cesar finished the game batting .568, and vaulted from 14th in the league in RBI to first.
The Lookouts (8-4) built an 8-0 lead against Carolina (7-5) by the fifth inning before the Mudcats attempted a rally. Joe Dillon (HR, 6, 1-4, 4RBI) hit a grand slam in the sixth against Dustin Moseley (W, 1-0), then Josh Willingham (HR, 4, 1-4, 2R, RBI) smacked a solo shot in the seventh.
Cesar connected in the ninth against Clint Sodowsky (ND, 1IP, 2H, 3R, 3ER, 1W, 2K) to ice the Lookouts victory, which broke a second-place tie in the East. Carolina trails first-place Jacksonville by two games.
Ungs (L, 0-1, 4+IP, 7H, 5R, 2ER, 0W, 2K) failed to pitch through the fifth inning for the third straight start for Carolina. Ungs allowed a run in the second, then three unearned runs in the third, highlighted by Cesar's two-run triple over Eric Reed's head in centerfield. Ungs allowed a leadoff single in the fifth before being replaced by Mike McNutt. McNutt promptly allowed a single, then one out later Cesar hit his first homer of the game.
Bill Murphy (0-1, 4.77) starts Wednesday night for Carolina against Chattanooga's Charlie Manning (1-0, 2.13) at 7:15 PM ET.
Chattanooga 0 1 3 0 4 0 0 0 3 --- 11 12 1 6
Carolina 0 0 0 0 0 4 1 0 0 --- 5 7 2 7
WP - Moseley (1-0)
LP - Ungs (0-1)
S - Thomspon (1)

Notes: Hall of Famer Tony Perez was in attendance for Tuesday night's game. Perez is a special assistant to Marlins President David Sampson. Perez was featured on News 14 Carolina's Sports Tonight at 10:00 PM Tuesday night.... Cesar's eight RBI set a Lookouts record, and came up one RBI shy of matching the Southern League mark, last reached in 1989. Of the quarted of players to record nine RBI, Jose Canseco with Huntsville in 1985 is the most recognizable.... Dillon's grand slam was the second by a Mudcat in 2004, eclipsing Carolina's single-season total from 2003. Josh Wilson hit the other grand slam on Opening Night in Mobile. Carolina's record for most grand slams in a single season is four, achieved three times.
