Huntsville, AL - Carolina's Peter Bauer and two relievers combined on a chilly, two-hit shutout of Huntsville 5-0 at Joe Davis Stadium on Monday night.
Bauer (W, 1-0, 5.2IP, 2H, 0R, 1W, 4K) recorded a win in his Marlins organizational debut, stymying the Stars bats, retiring 10 straight hitters at one juncture. Bauer, acquired by Florida in the minor league Rule V draft in December, shivered through 40-degree, 20-mile-an-hour winds, working two outs into the sixth inning before leaving due to pitch count.
Carolina (3-2) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run double by Jason Stokes (1-3, R, 2B, 2RBI, W, 2K). Stokes' hit scored Eric Reed (1-5, R) and Josh Willingham (0-3, R, HBP), who had reached on a bunt single and a hit batsman.
The Mudcats put the game away in the fourth. Huntsville starter Chris Saenz walked Stokes to begin the inning, followed by a bloop single by Joe Dillon (2-4, R). After a strikeout, Saenz was replaced by Ryan Miller, who served up consecutive doubles to Pat Magness (1-4, R, 2B, 2RBI) and Jimmy Goelz (2-4, 2-2B, RBI). Magness sliced a liner near the left field line with Brad Nelson's dive coming up a few feet short. Goelz gapped a double to right-center to finish the inning.
Mike McNutt (ND, 2.1IP, 0H, 0R, 0W, 3K) retired all seven batters he faced before Jerrod Fuell (ND, 1IP, 0H, 0R, 1W, 2K) pitched a hitless ninth.
Huntsville's final hit of the game was a fifth-inning double by Nelson.
