Mobile, AL -- Josh Willingham hit two home runs to lead a franchise-tying five homer barrage as Carolina outslugged Mobile 12-9 on Friday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.

The Mudcats (2-0) have hit nine homers in their first two games, scoring 23 runs en route to a pair of wins over the BayBears (0-2).  Eric Reed hit his first career home run, in his 820th at-bat to launch the game, while Joe Dillon hit his third homer in two games.

Despite the power surge, Carolina still necessitated a three-run double by Dillon (HR, 3, 3-6, 2R, 2B, 4RBI) in the eighth inning to grab the game's final lead.  Dillon torched a pitch from Homero Rivera (L, 0-1) into the left field corner igniting a five-run inning, putting the Mudcats ahead 10-9.  Carolina added two insurance runs on a double by Chip Ambres (1-5, R, 2B, RBI) and a run-scoring single by Michael Tucker (2-5, R, RBI).

Leading 2-1 in the third, Willingham (HR, 1&2, 2-4, 3R, 3RBI) connected for his second home run of the game, driving a tape-measure blast off of Mobile starter Duncan McAdoo, who surrendered four homers in the game.

After a Reed (4-5, 2R, 2RBI, 2SB) sacrifice fly in the fourth increased the lead to 5-2 an inning ahead of Dillon's blast to left.

Nic Ungs (ND, 4+IP, 9H, 5ER, 0W, 2K) carried a 6-2 advantage into the last of the fifth before his first start of the year unraveled.  Ungs allowed three consecutive hits, including a two-run double by JJ Furmaniak, which closed the gap to 6-4.  Ungs was relieved by Mike McNutt (ND, 2IP, 2H, 1ER, 0W, 4K), who fanned two hitters before yielding a tying home run to Ben Johnson.

Jim Kavourias (HR, 1, 1-5, R, RBI) swatted his first homer of the year in the seventh, positioning the Mudcats back into the lead 7-6.

The BayBears claimed their first lead of the season scoring three in the seventh against Randy Messenger (W, 1-0, 2IP, 5H, 3ER, 0W, 0K).  After Messenger recorded the first out of the inning, Mobile married four hits together ahead of a game-tying sacrifice fly by pinch hitter Joe GerberJosh Carter followed with a single deflecting off of first baseman Michael Tucker's (2-5, R, RBI) glove for a 9-7 Mobile lead.

Carolina's game-winning inning began on an infield hit by Reed, followed by a stolen base, a walk to Billy Hall (1-5, 2R, W, SB), then a double steal.  Willingham walked ahead of Dillon's three-run double.

Kevin Cave (S, 1, 1IP, 0H, 0R, 1W, 1K) earned his first Double-A save in his debut, working a hitless ninth inning.

The five home runs by Carolina tied a club record set in 2002 against the Tennessee Smokies.

Carolina closes its only trip to Mobile on Saturday with a 6:05 PM ET doubleheader at Hank Aaron StadiumBill Murphy (0-0) and Ronald Belizario (0-0) will make their respective premiers for Carolina.

Notes:  At least four Mudcat players fell ill after Thursday's season opener, allegedly due to clubhouse food.  SS Josh Wilson, 1B Jason Stokes, LHP Todd Moser and RHP Trevor Hutchinson suffered the reaction overnight, and none appeared in Friday's game against the BayBearsWilson and Stokes combined for eight RBI in the season opener, including a grand slam by Wilson and a three-run homer by StokesBilly Hall started in place of Wilson on Friday, while Michael Tucker got the nod at first base.  Hutchinson was the winning pitcher on Thursday night, while Moser was placed on the disabled list prior to Thursday's game with a groin injury.... Hall was promoted to Triple-A Albuquerque after Friday night's win... Reed collected a four-hit game on Friday night, including two of the non-typical variety.  Reed led off the game with his first career home run, coming on McAdoo's fourth pitch.  Then in the eighth inning, Reed had two hits in the inning, including a smash between second and third base which pegged the baserunner Tucker in the foot for the third out.  By baseball official scoring, Reed was credited with a hit while the shortstop recorded the putout of Tucker...  Thursday's four homers by the Mudcats fell one shy of matching a club record, while Friday's five-homer game matched it, initially set July 21, 2002 against the Tennessee SmokiesCarolina was an affiliate of Colorado at that time.
